The first chancellor of the upcoming International University of Nalanda, Professor Amartya Sen, Monday said availability of basic infrastructure for the proposed university was getting delayed due to the Central government. The Nobel laureate also demanded that the ancient Nalanda university site be declared as a world heritage site.

Sen, who is also the chairman of the university’s governing council, said, “There has been some delay from the government of India end but we are resolving the issue. We were primarily dependent on the Centre but will start with whatever basic facilities the state government has provided us.” The proposed university is coming up near the site of ancient Nalanda university.

He said the university will start functioning from September 2014 with schools on sociology and environmental studies. In the second phase, schools on economics, business management and information technology would come up. In the third phase, the university will start teaching international relations and linguistics.

Amartya is trying to shift the blame

Amartya Sen, the non-resident Chancellor, is trying to shift the blame to the Centre. His own contribution towards the University is limited to giving some flowery speeches, and inducting his favourite candidates like Gopa Sabharwal and Anjana Sharma by bypassing rules. Of course there would be delay from Centre's side because the Ministry of External Affairs is neither authorized nor competent to build Universities. But Amartya Sen himself has no experience of building Universities either. Can he answer why a regular governing board has not been constituted as yet? Even to build a primary school more minds are necessary than currently available with Nalanda University.
