The fifth All India Centre of Trade Unions (AICTU) was held today in the city. The convention called upon all the trade unions to fight unitedly against the policies of imperialism and globalisation pursued by the central government. It was pointed out that not all labour legislations enacted by the government have been implemented in the factories.
It demanded that all labour laws be implemented in the Special Economic Zone. The speakers called upon the government to pass the Contract Labour Abolition Bill which has been pending for a long time. They also strongly opposed the recent hike in diesel price and limiting the subsidized LPG cylinders. The convention also strongly opposed the opening of retail sector for FDI which, they claimed, would render more than 6 crore people unemployed.
