Aligarh Muslim University cuts down holidays, ABVP slams decision
The AMU administration refuted the charge saying its holiday calendar was guided primarily by the Central list which includes 14 compulsory and three restricted holidays.
"We are not interested in raking up controversies on trivial issues but have set our eyes on playing a meaningful and productive role in the task of nation-building," said AMU spokesperson Rahat Abrar.
ABVP activists burnt an effigy of AMU authorities here yesterday with its city secretary Kapil Yadav alleging the decision showed bias against a particular community.
Abrar said the university had removed festivals of Mahashivratri and Raksha Bandhan from its holiday list and had reduced the number of days for Moharram, Diwali and Dussehra by a day each.
He said the Jamia Millia Islamia in Delhi, which is a minority institution under the Central government, provides only 26 festival holidays.
Abrar said the AMU had established an innovation council in response to Prime Minister's appeal for adopting innovative measures aimed at increasing national productivity.
The council will be headed by the Pro-Vice Chancellor and will include five Deans from different faculties, he said.
