Akhilesh govt suspends senior police officer

Om the day CM Akhilesh Yadav visited riot-affected areas of Muzaffarnagar district, the UP government Sunday suspended IPS officer Subhash Chandra Dubey, who was the police chief of the district when the riots broke out.

Kamal Saksena, Secretary (Home), said Dubey had been suspended for “failing to control the riots in time”. He said the government has ordered a departmental inquiry against Dubey. Dubey was the SSP of Muzaffarnagar from August 28 to September 9. He was transferred on September 9 and attached to the DGP headquarters.

A one-member judicial commission, comprising retired Allahabad HC judge Vishnu Sahai, has taken up the inquiry. Saksena said the commission is expected to give its report in two months.

IG (Law and Order) R K Vishwakarma said there was no incident in Muzaffarnagar on Sunday, the second day when curfew was relaxed during day time. He said 188 persons have been arrested in connection with the 66 cases lodged, besides preventive arrests.
