A 12-year-old girl, kept as a domestic help by an Air India air hostess, escaped from an apartment where she had been illegally confined, tortured and harassed by her employer, police said on Tuesday.
DCP (South) B S Jaiswal said the air hostess, who is in her 20s, was on a flight to Australia and would be questioned on her return to the country. “We are in touch with airport authorities and she will join investigation as soon as she returns,” he said.
According to police, the girl, who hails from Senapati district in Manipur, was brought to Delhi two years ago by the sister of the air hostess who promised education and job. But she told police she was confined and tortured in a Netaji Nagar apartment.
On Monday afternoon, the girl reportedly used a ladder to reach a vent and escaped to the terrace. She then jumped to the terrace of the neighbour’s house and went downstairs. She narrated her ordeal to the neighbours who made her call police.
“The air hostess brought the girl from Senapati district in Manipur two years ago. On Monday, she knocked on our rear door after coming down from the terrace we share with them. She told us that she had been beaten with a belt two days ago by her employer and had been locked in the house since then. She had not eaten for two days. There were bruises on her face and hands,” a neighbour said.
In a statement to the Child Welfare Committee, the girl alleged that the air hostess used to come home late at night and ask her to give her a massage. She alleged that she was never paid and was assaulted with a belt each time she asked for money. The air hostess had a dog in the house and used it to scare her, the girl alleged.
She claimed that her employer would slap her, even slam her head against the wall if she found her asleep or resting.
“She never let the girl contact her family in Manipur. She would never send her out
