THE Mumbai Police Crime Branch Wednesday arrested an Air India cabin crew member allegedly sexually exploiting an event management professional on the pretext of marriage. The accused allegedly forced the woman to indulge in unnatural sex and undergo an abortion after impregnating her. According to Crime Branch officers, the accused has been identified as Raj Patel (30), a resident of Borivali.
Police said the victim met Patel through mutual friends in August, 2012. She was looking for a match at that time and after Patel expressed willingness, they entered into a relationship. “From March to November, the victim went to Patel’s house in Borivali as well as in Delhi, where he convinced her to have intercourse with him, promising to marry her. When she became pregnant, he forced her to undergo an abortion,” said a Crime Branch officer.
Soon after the abortion, Patel allegedly started avoiding the victim. He then told her that he had no intention of marrying her. The victim subsequently approached the Borivali police and a complaint was registered against Patel on November 5. The victim had also claimed that Patel made her indulge in unnatural sex. The man was booked under sections of rape, unnatural sex and cheating, police said.
Police had been trying to trace Patel, who had fled the city, for the past one-and-a-half months. On Wednesday, officers of the Crime Branch’s Unit XI received a tip-off that Patel would be coming to his Borivali residence and laid a trap. Patel was arrested and taken into custody by the Crime Branch. He was subsequently handed over to the Borivali police.
