With the Uttar Pradesh cabinet giving its nod to the Agra-Lucknow greenfield eco-friendly expressway last week, work on the ambitious project has started picking pace.

A public-private partnership monitoring committee (PPPMC), headed by Infrastructure & Industrial Development Commissioner (IIDC) Anil K Gupta, on Wednesday accepted and approved the concept report submitted by Redicon India and decided that the process for the selection of the project development consultant will start soon and that a request for qualification (RFQ) and request for proposal (RFP) would be invited in a week.

To be built at an estimated cost of R10,435 crore, the finalised alignment proposes a 270-km-long six-lane (extendable to eight lanes) expressway starting from the proposed Agra ring road close to the Yamuna Expressway, connecting Fatehabad, Shikohabad, Saifai, NH-92 near Etawah, NH-91 near Kannauj, NH-25A near Malihabad and ending at in Lucknow.

As per the monitoring committee's recommendations, the phasing of project in single and three packages has been elaborated in the final report with inter-alia merits and demerits of each mode. Moreover, necessary modifications as per the master plans of the cities along the expressway have also been incorporated.

Apart from cutting travel time between Agra and Lucknow from 7 to 3 hours, the expressway will help farmers move their produce to bigger markets and boost tourism as it will connect to the Yamuna Expressway between Greater Noida and Agra.
