The changes at Infosys that has brought Vishal Sikka as CEO also mark a generational shift in leadership with all of the original founders, including NR Narayana Murthy, moving into non-executive roles for the first time in the company’s history.

Sikka was picked from a short list of four candidates, both from within and outside Infosys, as he was seen to be a transformational leader, KV Kamath, lead independent director and head of the search committee, said.

“He is actually several personalities in one. He is a very strong thinker, he is a strong CTO (chief technology officer) and he has proved that credential in a very large company, he is a strong developer of products and software which he has also proved and he has executed on all this,’’ said Kamath.

“I think the unique opportunity that I see is that the world around us is being transformed by software, by digital technology, by computing. And the position that we had over the last three decades at Infosys of being a unique provider of software, solutions and services to the greatest companies in the world in my view gives us a once in a life time opportunity to help with this transformation that is going on around us in software,” said Sikka.

Infosys has been in a churn even over the past year since Murthy’s return from retirement last June.

Murthy said that he had fulfilled the mandates given to him by the board at the time of his return in June 2013 — to find an excellent successor for incumbent CEO SD Shibulal and to lay a strong foundation for the future growth of the company. “We have done several things ... I believe that I have brought this second mandate to a shape that the successor of Mr Shibulal can run it.”
