Affordable housing issue to take centre stage at int’l meet

At a time when India is grappling with real-estate price rise in many areas and the UPA government is pushing a low-cost housing scheme, senior central bank officials, housing finance experts and policymakers from around 15-20 countries will be converging here in April to share experiences and find sustainable solutions to these problems which are also affecting them.

The event -- to be held during April 10-13 -- will have the participation of officials from mostly Asia Pacific countries such as Thailand, Indonesia, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Mongolia, Afghanistan and Japan, as well as from international financial institutions such as World Bank and Asian Development Bank (ADB).

Experts from South Africa, Ghana and Nigeria -- which also have sizeable populations of low-income people -- are expected to participate in the international conference since the focus is on affordable housing and on using the housing sector as an engine and catalyst for inclusive growth.

Senior officials from central banks of all these developing and poor countries too are slated to speak. Academics, policymakers and experts from the US and Europe are expected to share the dais with their Asia Pacific and African counterparts to offer advice on international best practices, since the sub-themes for the conference include sharing of technology and innovative ideas on low-cost housing.

The speakers from these developed countries are also likely to touch upon topics such as the challenges faced by the housing sector due to increasing urbanisation, the latest financial instruments helping the sector as well as the
