Long Term RITES report says the project will add 3.4 lakh vehicles per day to Outer Ring Road by 2021, 5 lakh by 2031.

Engineering consultancy firm RITES will take into consideration projects that will be completed by 2021 for its report on smooth movement of traffic on the Outer Ring Road.

The Delhi government wants to make long-term plans for traffic decongestion and RITES to will include the upcoming Aerocity project, near Terminal 3 of Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) in its report.

In October last year, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit had issued directions to Public Works Department (PWD), following which the consultant was asked to help formulate a long-term plan for traffic management.

“Aerocity is an important upcoming project in Delhi and its impact on future traffic flow needs to be taken into consideration as part of our plan to decongest Outer Ring Road,” a PWD official said.

“All such future projects and their impact need to be studied in a holistic manner as part of the RITES scenario building report. We have also taken into consideration the future mass transport proposals like BRT and Metro, apart from regional road network improvement schemes,” the official said.

According to the report, the study area is IIT to NH-8 junction on the Outer Ring Road, which has the Ring Road in the north, Mehrauli-Mahipalpur Road in the south, Aurobindo Marg in the east and NH-8 in the west.

Proposals for underpasses or flyovers near Aerocity are also being taken into consideration as part of the report. The report says: “Massive development of 126.7 acres is envisaged at Aerocity in two phases. The IGI Airport will generate 3.4 lakh passenger car units (PCU) per day by 2021 and 5 lakh PCUs per day by 2031.”

Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) has proposed several plans for consideration in Master Plan 2021.

“Underpass or flyover across NH-8 near Mahipalpur junction; flyover at National Security Guard signal junction for decongestion of traffic by 2016; underpass across NH-8 at Shiv Murti junction; and inter-change at Shankar Vihar Metro station that allows passengers to switch between Airport Metro and Janakpuri-Kalindi Kunj Metro line”, are among the proposals in the report. DIAL confirmed that all these proposals were under consideration.

Three roads to divert traffic from Outer Ring Road are also being looked into, so as to provide better connectivity to IGIA and Aerocity.
