New Delhi: L K Advani on Sunday attempted to refashion Hindutva as “an inclusive, tolerant philosophy which was not averse to change with the changing times”.

Speaking on the concluding day of the BJP’s two-day national executive meeting — the first since last month’s Lok Sabha election defeat, and one which has been wracked by strong ideological disagreements and finger-pointing — Advani invoked former RSS chief Balasaheb Deoras’s concept of change in the organisation.

“It is said that the Sangh is changing and that it has to change further. It is a sign of their evolution. That which doesn’t change is not living, it is dead,” Advani said, quoting Deoras’s 1980 Vijayadashami speech and, in the process, also sending a subtle message to assembled delegates.

Emphasising the BJP’s RSS roots, Advani said: “How can a people believing in the dictum ekam sat vipra bahuda vadanti (truth is one, sages call it variously) ever become champions of a state which would uphold the interests of one religion at the cost of others?” The BJP’s Hindutva, he said, “was in accordance with the 1995 Supreme Court view that described it ‘a way of life’”.

Party president Rajnath Singh reiterated that “the BJP couldn’t be expected to snap its umbilical chord with the RSS”.

Seeking to put the lid on the debate on Varun Gandhi’s Pilibhit speech, Advani warned against “any narrow or bigoted anti-Muslim interpretation of Hindutva”. He made a mention of “two eminent Muslim colleagues” (Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi and Shahnawaz Hussain) who had raised the issue at the BJP office bearers’ meet a couple of days ago. The party had taken an ambivalent stand till then, and it was during that meeting that Advani said that “he had asked party spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad to disown Varun’s statements”.

Advani’s bid to refashion Hindutva found support from state BJP leaders. Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said “Muslim women, at times much against the wishes of their husbands, voted for (me) because benefits of development reached every section of society.” Therefore, said Chouhan, “Muslims must not go off the party’s radar”.

BJP general secretary Gopinath Munde — whose aide Pasha Patel is a leading advocate of the Sachar Committee recommendations in Maharashtra — said that “the party must reach out to Muslims even if they don’t vote for it”.

Bihar deputy chief minister Sushil Kumar Modi, too, spoke on similar lines.

» word Hindus is secular in true sense

The Supreme Court [of India] in the course of deciding an appeal in an election petition, has interpreted the meaning of 'Hindutva' and 'Hinduism' as a 'synonym of 'Indianisation' -- i.e. development of uniform culture by obliterating the differences between all all cultures co-existing in the country. 'The word Hindu is not a religious word. It is secular in origin. It is derived from the word Sindhu, which is the name of a major river that flows in the northwestern region of the Indian subcontinent. The ancient Greeks and Armenians used to refer the people living beyond the river Sindhu as Hindus and gradually the name stuck. When the Muslims came to the sub continent they called the people living in the region as Hindustanis to distinguish them from the foreign Muslims

AdvaniJi talks about change. The change that India desperately needs is the retirement of all worn-out geriatric politicians like himself. At 81, people like him have no energy and no new ideas. Hindutwa preaches Sanyasashram and the renunciation of everything in the 4th quarter of life. At this stage of his life AdvaniJi needs to retire to the Himalayas or spend all his time with his great grand kids rather than regurgitating meaningless platitudes if he is a real Hindu. Ditto all Indian politicians above the age of 65.

» BJP is reaping the seeds it sew by dawdling over Varun

Yes, you can argue that Varun won his seat. But how many dozens more did the BJP lose elsewhere because of Varun? Compare this with what the Congress did with Sajjan Kumar and Jagdish Tytler: Sacrificing a single 'safe' Delhi seat to gain many more in Punjab. BJP could've done the same by kicking Varun out. But they didn't, which is one of many reasons why Congress has majority now and they don't.

What Varun said is less important than many other important nation's issues.Only the communal persons are creating a mountain out of a mole by referring to Varun's speech. These persons are given a good answer by voters in Varun's constituency. If critics of Varun and the enemies of BJP are really interested in nation's interest, they must seriously discuss the issue of crores of rupees of black money stored in Swiss bank account to which Advani had referred to in his election speeches.

» Just rhetoric

This is all empty rhetoric. A leopard cannot change its spots. I am sure the BJP will again jump at the first opportunity to divide people in the name of religion so that it can come to power. If the BJP is really sincere, why doesn't it say something about the forensic report which says the Varun Gandhi tapes were not doctored. At that time it had condemned the "alleged" contents of the tape. What does it have to say now?

The BJP rogues bash Varun for his hate speech and blame its defeat on his hate speech. But they have to explain one plain truth. How Varun could win the election by more than 2.5 lakhs votes when so called liberals and who now champion cause of tolerance could not even retain their deposit in UP and many other states. If people wanted to vote against hate speech, they should have defeated Varun. But, the same people have summarily rejected opportunists who are neither secular nor communal. If congress and other secular parties seek votes on the basis on minority appeasement, what is the problem for BJP to seek votes on the basis of majority appeasement? Since these rogues cannot make a choice, people choose to reject them. If all BJP candidates talk sincerely like Varun, BJP will certainly get more than absolute majority. So, the cause of defeat is very clear to all but not to ostrich-like people in BJP.

» BJP - Dumping Hindutva?

Good the bickerings are in; Sad that BJP is not honest in identifying the cause for their rout. They are as morally corrupt in their approach as is the Congress for not naming Pakistan an enemy country in the face of the worst terror attacks. As for the comments here - I'm rarely surprised given their pithy understanding of the Indian history and ethos. It is these people that let down the majority of the country.Having taken the Hindus for a ride, the BJP has jumped to dump that in whose name it tried to rake in the moolah - worse blaming that for its failure. India is the only country in the world which was truly multicultural centuries before Christianity

It is like old wine in a new bottle.Controllers ( RSS ) remain the same. But the front ( BJP ) says they will change with the times. On what BJP track record, can we believe it ?In what way they change.Words are rituals in India. We want to see these old Brahmin / upper-caste lobby actors thrown out lock, stock and barrel.Brahmins' importance goes if we give up faith in Hindu Gods.Same is the fear of all preachers of all religions. They themselves don't really observe all the rituals they want us to observe. That is my personal observation. All males believe in God to subjugate women as lower-order gender as only God sanctions such unjust order !I only trust BJP ONLY if they cut their link with the religion of Hinduism.Religion should be the private matter for any citizen. BJP wants to and does put fear in Hindus on alleged domination by other religions in Hindu-dominated country just like Pakistan Taliban in Muslim dominated Pakistan.
