A month after Delhi gangrape, govt yet to punish top cops, women still insecure: AIDWA

AIDWA today alleged that the government is shying away from responsibility in the Delhi gangrape case and failed to act against the top police and transport officials concerned.

"One month after the horrific Delhi gangrape, the Central and state governments are yet to learn any lessons. This is shown by the refusal to pinpoint accountability and responsibility for those responsible," All India Democratic Women's Association (AIDWA) said in a statement.

"Top police officials including the Police Commissioner and those heading the Transport Ministry in Delhi should have been acted against. Why has the Central government and the Sheila Dikshit government not acted?" the organisation asked.

The statement comes a month after the 23-year-old paramedic student was brutally gangraped in a moving bus in the capital. The victim passed away in a Singapore hospital after fighting for her life for two weeks.

It demanded that government should provide assistance and support for the family and the male friend accompanying the victim.

AIDWA insisted that the case must be completed speedily and the criminals brought to justice.

The association mentioned it met Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde yesterday to press for action on issues related to sexual assault. But the Minister's attitude failed to "inspire any confidence", it said.

"In spite of all the high sounding statements from the Central Government the attitude of the Home Minister did not inspire any confidence of a change in attitude to understand the urgency of issues involved," it claimed.
