YSR for Tirumala hills be made ‘plastic free’ zone

Hyderabad, Jan 22 : The Andhra Pradesh government is planning to make the Tirumala hills, the temple city, as ‘no plastic zone’.

While taking stock of pollution in the state, AP Chief Minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy has insisted that the Tirumala hills be made ‘plastic free’ city. Reddy asked the TTD officials to use only paper bags in place of plastic bags to carry the famous laddu prasadam, as a first step.

Similarly, the chief minister asked the Viskhapatnam Urban Development Authority (VUDA) to implement green belt project around the Ramkey Pharma City, a exclusive industrial park for chemical and pharmaceutical industry.

In a bid to control the pollution, the state government has decided to encourage the ‘concerned citizen’, who volunteers to provide vital information about the polluting industries. “They (informers) will be given cash awards for providing vital clues about the polluting industries in the state,” officials said. Further, the government is contemplating to launch an awareness campaign against pollution in the state, they added.
