Wipro Spectramind Services, the business processing (BPO) arm of Wipro Technologies Ltd, is in the process of inking a BPO deal with software major Microsoft.
Addressing a press conference shortly after the visit of Microsoft chairman and chief software architect Bill Gates to the Wipro Campus, Wipro Technologies vice chairman and chief executive officer Vivek Paul confirmed that it was a ’largish deal’ but refused to elaborate as the company was expected to make an announcement soon on the same.
“The relationship between Wipro and Microsoft is multifaceted — Wipro is a leading customer as well as the largest reseller of Microsoft products in India. We also have an R&D outsourcing relationship and the ability to sell together in the market place,” Mr Paul said.
Earlier, addressing software developers in Wipro, Mr Gates said Microsoft would continue to invest in its relationship with Wipro.
“The combination of Microsoft with its strong focus in technologies and Wipro with its strength in software services could be leveraged to take on even companies such as IBM which is strong in both the areas,” he said.
Both the companies might look at leveraging this combination in the marketplace, he added.
Besides product development services for Microsoft and a development centre in Hyderabad, Wipro also set up a dedicated Microsoft competency centre to spread technology learning, Mr Paul said. On the acquisition of the global energy practice of American Management Systems (AMS), Mr Paul said, deals like this would help the company to accelerate quickly to the global business scenario and also increase its ability to bring solutions which would help in vertical approach, the core strength of the company.
On outsourcing deals, Mr Paul said Wipro has also won a non-voice BPO deal from a company in the financial services segment which is also an IT customer of the company. Wipro has recently won the Lehman Brothers deal covering both IT and BPO.
However, Mr Paul said the BPO space is yet to mature and there is a marginal depression in the basic voice segment of BPO services.
