As Delhi University goes to the polls, Expressindia catches up with the student leaders of different hues, on the premises of the Art Faculty of Delhi University and gets them talking on various issues.
Nupur Sharma, ABVP candidate for the Delhi University Students’ Union, DUSU presidential post said that she does not want the students’ elections to be turned into battleground and wants to ensure a calm environment in the campus.
Calling herself a student activist, Nupur said that she does not want to be just another poster girl and will ensure that there is no place for the bad elements in the campus. She also questioned the accountability of UGC grants to the university.
Distancing herself from the glamour list of ‘good looking’ presidential candidates, Nupur clarified that a girl like her does not become glamorous if she has a fair complexion and sharp features.
“Why does media call me a glamour girl,” she complains.
AISA candidate Nihit Saigal lamented that instead of raising common students’ issues, DUSU elections have become all about posters and glamorous faces.
“Because of lack of enough hostels, DU students are exploited at the hands of landlords who charge arbitrary rents,” he rued.
Amrita Bahri of the National Students Union of India who was elected as the DUSU president in 2007 is hopeful that NSUI will continue its winning spree this year as well.
Speaking to Expressindia, Amrita said because of the good works done by her office last year, NSUI is all set to sweep the elections again.
“We are absolutely going to win. NSUI has a great history and the kind of works which we have accomplished for the campus, like getting the CCTVs installed, making it a no smoking zone and getting funds for the construction of a hostel for the North Eastern Girls students are definitely going to give us the lead over others,” Amrita quipped.
