: Water way to go. Rain water everywhere. During this season, it’s havoc time for the skin and hair as well. Monsoon is the time when your skin is often unstable. High humidity can cause eruptive skin problems, and it can end up looking very dull. More so, if the skin is oily. Sweat and oil secretions are deposited on the skin, making it look dull, and this attracts dirt and pollutants from the atmosphere more easily. This is why eruptive conditions like rashes, spots and pimples are common during the monsoons.

Amee Daxini, assistant medical coordinator, Kaya Skin Clinic, suggests cleansing the skin to keep it fresh and healthy. Avoid harsh soap products that strip the skin of protective oils. If the skin is dry, avoid deodorant or antibacterial soaps, since they might dry up the skin. “Everyday usage of sunscreen, preferably with an SPF 30, is a must, which needs to be coupled with cleansing and toning everyday.”

Monsoons can have a de-moisturising effect on dry skin and an over-hydrating effect on oily skin. Use a non-water based moisturiser if you get wet often.

Exfoliation for dry skin is essential. This not only helps to keep the pores free of hardened oil, but also clears the skin of dead cells. If rashes appear, discontinue use of grains and scrubs. Instead, use a medicated mask to soothe the decreased surface grease and protect the skin from pimples and acne. Clove medicated masks are ideal.

Hair Care: Take special care of the hair as it frizzes a lot due to high humidity levels. This raises the cuticles of the hair resulting in roughness and dryness. The most common hair complaints, says Shweta Sodhi, education manager, Kerastase India, are about smoothness, manageability, moisture, shine and frizz control. Use a shampoo and a conditioner with anti-humidity and anti-frizz protection. Use anti-humidity protection serum on the hair which will control the frizziness. If care is not taken at the right time, it can become weak and result in breakage.

Avoid getting your hair wet in the rain, advises Dr Rashmi Shetty, consultant, Parachute Advanced Hair Advisory.
