In the face of aggressive Congress efforts to woo one of its major constituents, the UNPA on Thursday managed to put up a united face apparently persuading Samajwadi Party to hold its cards on the Indo-US nuclear deal.

After a nearly four-hour long meeting, leaders of the UNPA told a press conference that they favoured a national debate on the nuclear deal as there were many aspects that needed clarifications.

However, the Samajwadi Party, whose 39 MPs may be crucial to the UPA Government in the Lok Sabha if the Left parties withdraw support, again gave indications of tilting towards Congress when it said "communalism is a bigger danger than the nuclear deal".

"I said it yesterday. And I repeat it today," SP General Secretary, Amar Singh, who was briefed by National Security Advisor M K Narayanan on the deal on Wednesday, said in the presence of SP Chief Mulayam Singh Yadav, TDP leader N Chandrababu Naidu, INLD Chief O P Chautala, AGP chief Brindavan Goswami and Jharkhand Vikas Party leader Babulal Marandi.

The UNPA leaders said they were not satisfied even after clarifications issued by the Prime Minister's Office on the deal and would consult eminent scientists before deciding their stand.

Chautala said the UNPA it will not give "any certificate" for the deal before Prime Minister Manmohan Singh goes to G-8 summit in Japan on July seven.

Replying to a question on his party's stand on support to the Government on the deal, Amar Singh shot back, "why should UNPA spell out its strategy when the Government and the Left parties were yet to divorce".

Economic Growthby Vivek Ambastha (Indian Institute Of Management,Ahmedabad)Compound Rates of GrowthIn the modern version of an old legend, an investment banker asks to be paid byplacing one penny on the first square of a chess board, two pennies on the secondsquare, four on the third, etc. If the banker had asked that only the white squares beused, the initial penny would have doubled in value thirty-one times, leaving $21.5million on the last square. Using both the black and the white squares would havemade the penny grow to $92,000,000 billion.People are reasonably good at forming estimates based on addition, but foroperations such as compounding that depend on repeated multiplication, wesystematically underestimate how quickly things grow. As a result, we often losesight of how important the average rate of growth is for an economy. For aninvestment banker, the choice between a payment that doubles with every square onthe chess board and one that doubles

If Samajwadi Party is convinced fully that the N-Deal is in the larger interest of the National, then, Let them go and convince the Muslims that the deal is good for India and that is why they are supporting the UPA. Why then Amar Singh of SP is trying to give a Communal TAG to it by saying that it is to keep the communal forces (BJP) out. All these gimmicks are self serving ones. So that Muslims of UP should not feel that the SP is supporting a deal which is rejected by secular parties. In the next general elections when they loose the seats which they have now then they will realise, what blunder thay have committed by supporting UPA on this N-Deal issue.

While SP is consulting scientists to see if the deal is national interest, Deve Gowda is consulting astrologer to see if the nuclear deal can help his interests!

India is in dire need of clean and cheap energy in view of skyrocketing crude oil prices. The crde oil import bill is eatingup our foreign exchange reserve, causing inflationary pressure, price rise and enviromental degradation. We also need feual to continue the functioning of our atomic power projects facing severe shortage of enriched uranium.Thirdly we need Strategic partner like USA to meet the threats of Chinese agggression as USA can be a reliable friend having comman interest at global level. We must remember that in 1962 it was the only USA which came forward to deter the PLA from advancing beyond Tejpur into the Brahamaputra Valley. If SP helps the Govt in ratification of the Indo-US nuke deal its contributions towards protecting indias economic and strategic interests would be recorded in history of our great country.

Consult Scientist's is the only the New Mantra to Drag the time. UPA just want to be in power whether there will be deal or no-deal, UPA is least bothered about it. They just want to be in power. What did the Congress did for this country in 50 years of its rule, NOTHING. What they are doing for Oil Shortage NOTHING, says it is a global issue. What are they doing for inflation NOTHING. You get NOTHING if Congress led UPA are in power. It is just to create sympathy for ManMohanSingh to face Next Election covering Inflation, Infletration, Terrorism etc....

I am really scared even with the idea that criminals like Amar Singh, Mulayam Singh will roam scoot free in the corridors of power in Delhi once again. These people in SP, BSP have no idea what is science (of nuclear technology), what is secularism, democracy etc but will keep on shouting on those topics even in forums like NDTV discussion with Rajdeep Sardesi (used to be an intelligent guy but now seems to be totally sold out for personal survival and for his TV channel).

Crude prices are hitting the roof and they are not coming down as past experience suggest. All scientists agree this is the best course and now SP wants to show deal to experts. These are all buffoons buying publicity and time. Nuke deal will relieve India's need for energy which will lead to less inflation since other sources such as crude are more expensive. How can they blame Manmohan Singh for inflation when they themseleves do not agree for nuke deal, which is good for India. No body should vote for these small time jerks. Govt should sign the deal if most scientific community agree. If they do people will vote for them with a much better majority. Otherwise Congress will have neither vote nor the deal. BJP is just sitting on the sideline just waiting to come to power and then sign exactly the same deal. They very well know that they cannot do better deal with USA.

» Don't compare Inflation with N-Deal
Posted by Shankar on 2008-07-03 19:11:28.327535+05:30
Dont compare Inflation with the N-Deal. MMS has failed protecting common man. N-Deal is going to give you power only after 2020 insted of which you can go for Wind Energy which you are going to the same power/energy in 2 years if installed oa sea shore. Being very near to Oil Manufacturing countries we don't have any bi-lateral relation or Oil control strategy with those countries. Cong know just to Dance for fantacy words surrendring national integraty.

You jerk only 6% in 15 years. Don't dance on your key board if you are a Congress jerk. For 6% you want India to lose its independence ? BJP will get a better deal, they started the process.

Have these idiots been sleeping till now. All scientists including scientists such as Abdul Kalam have already voiced their support for the deal.. long back. Which "scientists" these jokers are going to consult???

» Amar or Mulayam Singh can get a PhD, if that satisfy you
Posted by Jay on 2008-07-03 19:16:56.594208+05:30
Amar Singh can get an honorary PhD in nuclear physics degree from Lucknow University or any other university in UP or Bihar. So can Mulayam. Sometime ago our fire brand ex-Congress leader Mamta Banerjee also claimed that she has a doctorate degree from an University abroad (which later proved to be false). Mr Pabitra Sarkar, ex-Vice Chancellor of a reputed university in West Bengal (naturally a die hard CPM party worker and who ruined West Bengal primary and high school education in Jyoti Basu’s era) also forged his PhD in Bengali language (actually in “Shantali” language, a tribal language used by Shantali tribe in Bengal) from University of Chicago! So you see, it’s not that universities in UP or Bihar do it. But in case of UP university, they need not to spend any money for that; only send a few supporters to VC’s residence and the degree certificate will be send by courier the next day. Then people like you should not have any problem to accept their “opinions” on such matters.

what a shame.SP is a party of jokers. If u hear Mulayam on TV u wonder what this chap is actually speaking U cant understand head or tail of it.Then comes Amarsingh(BACHHANSINGH)I dont know how they got importence in politics. Now they want to discuss with scientist. Will they undestand Thorium,Fusion etc. They know only kickbacks.I am 100% sure that large kickbacks must be involved in this deal, otherwise why all of a sudden everybody is talking about deal and not about inflation, suicides of farmers, loss of public property in J
