Mumbai, Apr 20: The Videocon Group has entered into a tie-up with Auto Cars—an independent logistics services firm—in order to source logistics services from them for handling operations of Videocon’s upcoming wholesale ‘Bolld Cash & Carry’ retail stores, Sunil Mehta, chief executive officer, cash & carry division of Videocon Group told FE. Auto Cars is also planning to enter into a joint venture with a Japanese logistics company for sourcing technical know-how, apart from sourcing JIT (just-in-time) technology and lean management. This is to start new supply chain management initiatives for Videocon branded consumer durables and industrial products this fiscal.

According to Arvind Somany, senior manager, Auto Cars, “As part of the strategy, we will be able to reduce inventory levels for Videocon consumer durables and white goods from 21 days to 10-12 days, and implement a three day inventory for Videocon’s industrial products in this fiscal. For the purpose, we are also planning to expand our number of warehouses from 28 to 65 cities this fiscal, so that we can spread our logistics operations from urban to semi-urban markets as well. Our objective is to reach 100 cities which have a high spending power by end-consumers, in the near future.”

Auto Cars plans to recruit 300 employees at all levels right from supervisors, executives, system operators, forklift drivers and other material handling equipment operators.

Auto Cars currently has a warehousing space of 1.4 million sq ft and each upcoming additional warehouse will have an area size of 70,000 sq ft, added Somany.

Auto Cars has earlier handled Videocon’s logistics in terms of taking the primary transportation business from factory to warehouses in the first phase. “In Phase II, goods were transported from warehouses to dealers and now in the third phase, we are extending our logistics services to Next retail apart from Bolld Cash & Carry stores,” he said.
