Vedanta to set up Rs 7,000 cr aluminium plant in Orissa

Mumbai, Feb 10: Vedanta Resources Plc has announced its plans to set up a greenfield five lakh tonne per annum (tpa) aluminium smelter in Orissa with a 1,000 mw coal-based power project for captive consumption. This project will position Vedanta among the top ten aluminium producers globally.
The project will entail an investment of Rs 7,000 crore which is in addition to Vedanta’s ongoing investment of Rs 10,000 crore in project expansion. The company has claimed that the investment of $1.6 billion into the Orissa project will be the highest FDI into the country, in metals and mining segment.
Commenting on its plan, Vedanta founder and CEO Anil Agarwal said at a press conference, “this is a major step in our vision to create one million tonnes of aluminium capacity to meet the growing demand.”
Currently, Vedanta has a production capacity of one lakh tpa through its subsidiaries — Bharat Aluminium (Balco) and Madras Aluminium (Malco). Balco is close to completing its 2.5 lakh tpa new smelter plant expansion and refinery while Malco provides a capacity of 40,000 tpa after debottlenecking of its Mettur Dam smelter capacity. Post expansion, Vedanta will have a capacity of four lakh tonne apart from the Orissa project.
Vedanta currently holds a 21% market share in India while Hindalco and Nalco hold 34% and 30% respectively and rest comes in through imports.
Vedanta, through its subsidiaries, holds a 51% stake in Balco and a 80% stake in Malco. The company has announced its intention to buyout the remaining stake in Malco and delist the stock from the bourses.
