New Delhi, Nov 25: The urban development ministry has sought a massive Rs 2,89,615 crores in the 11th five-year plan to develop infrastructural facilities in urban areas.
“We have sought a total fund of Rs 2,89,615 crores for implementation of the 11th five-year plan schemes. The Planning Commission has approved it and now it has gone to the National Development Council for the final approval,” urbandevelopment secretary M Ramachandran said.
“So far five-year plans failed to focus on urban transport system in a big way. This time we have earmarked Rs 1,32,590 crores specifically for developing transportation system in urban areas,” he said.
“Beside transport, we have set a target to make avail the entire population in urban areas with water supply and sewerage system by the end of the 11th five-year plan.”
“Urbanisation is a key indicator of economic development and should be seen as a positive factor for overall development. Also as economy grows, its towns and cities expand in size and volume and the contribution of urban sector to the national economy also increases,” Ramachandran said.
The contribution of urban sector to India’s GDP has increased from 29% in 1950-51 to 47% in 1980-81. The urban sector presently contributes about 62-63 per cent of the GDP and this is expected to increase to 75% by 2021.
