New Delhi, Jan 24: Sales of personal computers in Asia-Pacific (excluding Japan) showed 16% year-on-year increase in 2004 to touch 34 million units and bouyancy in market is expected to continue despite tsunami disaster last month, research firm IDC said.
Total PC shipments in last quarter of 2004 grew 13% year-on-year to 9.1 million units, partly riding on better-than-expected desktop sales in India and China.
“The PC market was not impacted by the devastating tsunami as it hit at the end of December. IDC does not expect the tsunami to have a large impact on the Asia-Pacific PC market in first quarter as the negative effects are mostly limited to the local tourism industry, although the potential spread of disease remains a wild card in the outlook,” Bryan Ma, IDC’s personal systems research associate director, said.
In India, the seasonal spurt in PC purchases was slightly muted in fourth quarter of 2004 as commercial users postponed their purchases in anticipation of price drops fllowing the introduction of the new WTO tariffs in 2005.
