: Blogger Clive Crook is quite right in quoting Groucho Marx on sincerity, if well faked, being a winner (‘Turning to Marx’, March 6). Crook, famous in India for his insights into Indian democracy as much as his very name, has an enviable record of looking through pretences. Unfortunately for us, the campaign is coming mostly via TV instead of indepth print articles or reviews. As Groucho said, “I find television very educating. Every time somebody turns on the set, I go into the other room and read a book.” My suggestion: The Audacity of Hope.

Deal compromise

On the nuclear deal with the US, the Left has again resorted to blackmail (‘Left threatens to vote against Budget if...’, Mar 6). The Left regularly chants the mantra that the deal will make India hostage to US interests, but the reality is otherwise. The draft safeguards agreement with the IAEA makes it clear that India would get the requisite fuel supply assurances from international suppliers even if the Americans abandon us. For India, it’s a win-win deal. If the UPA can make the Left climbdown from its dogmatic position in some sort of compromise, then the government can be saved.

Go tech driven

Vikram S Mehta (‘People and technology’, Mar 4) has raised a valid question on income gaps. Finding the right use of technology in education and skill development would help narrow wealth disparities. Policymakers ought to study this aspect while allotting funds.
