New Delhi: The US-based telecommunication signalling and switching solutions company, Tekelec is contemplating setting up a global research and development (R&D) centre and a regional customer support facility in India.

The company has recently established its wholly owned subsidiary in India headquartered in New Delhi for sales, support and distribution of its equipment in Indian market. Tekelec is also outsourcing some of its R&D development work in India to Wipro Technologies and Hughes Software Systems (HSS).

“Looking at the telecom services growth in the country, India is increasingly becoming an important market for Tekelec in Asia region from market perspective,” Tekelec worldwide president and chief executive officer Frederick M Lax told eFE. Mr Lax, who is currently in India to meet customers and to participate in Supercomm India 2004, also claimed that Tekelec has already received orders from Reliance Infocomm, Tata Teleservices and Bharti Televentures. He, however, did not disclose value of the deals. Tekelec is a Nasdaq-listed company and recorded a revenue of $263.7 million for 2003.

“There is certainly a potential for setting up a captive technology development in India and we will continue to look for opportunities to grow our operations in India. A support centre for servicing customers outside India is also a possibility. However, it is too early to say much as we are still looking at different business models,” Mr Lax said.

Tekelec has already appointed Avijit Chaliha as managing director for its Indian subsidiary and will be bringing more people on board for sales and support operations in the country. “We will also be expanding our network of channel partners, service and support partners and alliances for R&D for local requirements in India,” Mr Chaliha said.
