Tata Motors has kickstarted its drive to bring in next generation vehicles of existing models with the launch of Indica Vista. The next generation Indigo will be launched in less than two years from now.
“Tata Motors had been working on a new platform since 2005 and Indica Vista is the first vehicle to be rolled out based on this platform. It will also be used to roll-out the next generation Indigo,” says Rajiv Dube, president (passenger car), Tata Motors while launching the Indica Vista on Monday.
“The first Indigo was launched three years after the Indica. However, the next generation Indigo will come earlier, probably in 18-24 months,” added Nitin Seth, head (passenger car unit), Tata Motors.
According to Seth, it’s only in four years time that the company expects to breakeven from the new models that will be rolled out from the new platform that has been developed with an investment of Rs 1,700 crore. The new Indica, priced in the Rs 3.49 lakh to Rs 4.88 lakh range is available in three powertrain options and is expected to surpass average sales of the earlier Indica. “Once the company’s ramp up operations stabilize and the market picks up, India Vista is expected to surpass the earlier average sales of Indica a month at 12,000 units,” said Dube. He added that the next generation vehicles in the company’s utility vehicle portfolio will include the Tata Cliffrider, showcased at the auto expo in 2006, followed by the next generation Sumo and Safari.
Tata Motors, India’s largest automobile company with revenues of $8.8 billion n 2007-08, is the country’s third largest passenger car manufacturer. The company, which is present in the passenger vehicle category with Indica, Indigo, Sumo, Safari, Winger and Ace, registered a growth of 1.4% in sales in July at 17,118 units as against 16,881 units year-on-year.
