Following a legal row, Tata Sky, a leading DTH player has agreed to restore the three sports channel- ESPN, Star Cricket and Star Sports in 12 days time. ESPN Software India Private Limited (ESPN), the exclusive distributor of ESPN, Star Sports and Star Cricket in India had filed a petition in Delhi High court after Tata Sky slashed its base price but removed three of its sports channel and channels from the BBC bouquet asking the subscriber to opt for these channels separately, for a price.
The legal counsel of Tata Sky, Ramji Srinivasan, confirmed the development. "The company will restore ESPN, Star Cricket, Star Sports in 12 days time, that is what we have said in the High Court."
Asked if Tata Sky has plans to restore other channels that had gone off air, Srinivasan told FE " The issue revolved only around these three sports channels."
According to Nanju Ganpathy, legal counsel, ESPN, the Delhi High Court expressed the view that Tata Sky appeared to have violated the order of the High Court dated May 30, 2008 (where in the court had directed ESPN not to disconnect or disrupt signal in any manner of the three channels to Tata Sky pending the final disposal of the Tata Sky petition by the TDSAT) and expressed its intention to issue notice of contempt.
The counsel for Tata Sky requested the court not to pass any order and stated that he would persuade his client to voluntarily undo what they had done on June 1, 2008 and restore the three channels of ESPN to all the Tata Sky subscribers. It was then also stated by counsel of Tata Sky that they would start restoring the three ESPN channels in a phased manner within 12 days.
