Tuesday , March 04, 2008 at 2352 hrs Tata Communications, in a strategic partnership with Telsima Corporation, plans to roll out WiMax services in 110 cities for the enterprise segment and in 15 cities for the retail segment by 2008.
The joint venture is eyeing a market size of 2 lakh subscribers in the retail segment alone. Tata Communications plans to invest about $500 million spread across next three years in the WiMax venture in the country.
“The company is in talks with investors to sell a minority stake in its retail unit,” said Shankar Prasad, president, retail business, Tata Communications.
The company, which has already launched its WiMax services in Bangalore in December 2007, plans to head to Delhi next and aims to follow up by offering broadband Internet access and content services to enterprises and residential customers in the other cities of Mumbai, Pune, Chennai, Hyderabad, Cochin, Chandigarh, and Kolkata in the initial phase.
“By 2010, we want to capture a 20% share of the total market,” Prateek Pashine, vice-president, planning, broadband and retail business, Tata Communications, said.
