TN IT policy aims at 25% share in national ICT production

Tuesday , May 06, 2008 at 0111 hrs The Information Technology Policy 2008 of Tamil Nadu aspires for a key role in South Asia and 25% share in Indian ICT production by 2011 from its present share of 11%. It envisages creation of 30 lakh new jobs.

The policy vision, presented in the State Assembly by rural development minister MK Stalin, on behalf of Chief minister M Karunanidhi, who holds the industry and information technology portfolios, is to make "Tamil Nadu the ICT hub of South Asia by creating a knowledge-driven ecosystem, leveraging entrepreneurship and promoting socially inclusive growth to achieve a 25% share of the Indian ICT industry''.

As per the policy vision document, eight lakh direct jobs, seven lakhs in ICT services sector and one lakh in ICT manufacturing, and 22 lakh indirect jobs can be created.

The document said that the state government "is committed not only to sustain the growth momentum but also to accelerate it so that Tamil Nadu can reap the twin benefits of economic prosperity as well as increased employment.

The government plans to achieve this goal by setting up IT infrastructure in all major cities and towns in the State and facilitating investments and setting up training centres to provide adequate manpower from the one lakh engineering and 2 lakh Arts, Science gradates passing out every year.

In the reply to the debate on the demands for the information technology department, Stalin said that 50,000 sq ft of built up area would be constructed in Madurai, Tirunelveli, Salem and Tiruchi where the IT entrepreneurs can set up their units.

IT parks are planned in Vellore, and a new integrated IT complex in Hosur in public-private partnership are among the new initiatives planned.
