



New Delhi, May 30: Despite Suzuki Swift’s aggressive pricing, Hyundai Motor India is not planning to launch a cheaper variant of its premium hatchback Getz. After the debut of the 1341 cc Swift recently at a price tag of Rs 3.87 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi), auto industry has been expecting a rationalisation in the price of the Korean hatchback. The 1298 cc Getz base model is priced at Rs 4.5 lakh, and comes with freebies worth Rs 30,000 such as free insurance.
When contacted, confirming this Hyundai Motor India president BVR Subbu told FE: “The Swift is not a comparison to the Getz, as the latter is in a different league. We believe that the Swift is a competitor to the Santro”.
Interestingly, sources said that the number of test-drives in May for the Getz on a week-end has quadrupled, while the order confirmation has doubled for the car in the Capital. Since its launch in September, 2004, the Getz has sold 10,985 units till the end of April, 2005. The premium hatchback segment also includes cars such as the Corsa Sail and Fiat Palio.
According to Maruti Udyog, the number of bookings for the Swift have increased to 12,000 already. Also, according to Hyundai, the Getz is wider, roomier and with more boot space than the Swift. Comparing the specifications of the two cars, the length of Getz is 3810mm, while that of Swift is 3695 mm, a difference of 115 mm (or 11 cm). The wheel base of Getz is 2455 mm, while that of its Japanese rival is 2390 mm. The company claimed that the torque delivery of the Getz is better as against the Swift.
