



New Delhi, Aug 27: In an initiative to make inroads in the entry-level market segment in India, Sun Microsystems and AMD have announced a joint initiative to bring customers the benefits of their Solaris operating system (OS), Linux and Java technology. By offering both Solaris OS and Linux, Sun customers will have a choice of enterprise operating systems and access to numerous applications.
In addition, Sun’s Java Enterprise system will enable it’s customers with AMD’s Opteron processor-based systems to develop and deploy applications in a simple and cost effective manner.
According to Ajay Goel, director of sales, Sun Microsystems India by supporting the 64-bit Linux and Windows platform on the AMD Opteron processor, Sun is allowing companies to migrate their current Java applications from a 32-bit to 64-bit computing platform with little or no changes to the code, as well as enabling the development and deployment of new Java applications and Web services.
“The initiative is relevant to a market like India where the small medium business (SMB) segment has been witnessing increasing adoption of newer technologies,” he said. With the AMD initiative, Sun is bringing to the 64-bit enterprise computing market network computing systems that provide the levels of integration, scalability, fault-tolerance and performance that enterprises want, Mr Goel said.
Sun and AMD will jointly form an iForce partner programme for independent software vendors (ISVs) and developers creating an porting applications to the Solaris OS. Both the companies will also collaborate on joint marketing, and sales activities, as well as joint product, developer and channel marketing programme.
