Former Prime Minister VP Singh is right that the Indo-US nuclear agreement is a “much-hyped document” which ignores India’s interests. What is more relevant is his remark about the insignificant contribution of nuclear energy to the total energy output in our country and his advocacy of coal-fired power plants. It’s true that at this rate, even after a century, nuclear power is not going to make a difference to India’s total power generation.

Utmost urgency
Your editorial (‘Something to cheer’, August 7) has rightly urged the government to offload some public sector equity in order to enhance choice of quality stocks to sustain the interest of international investors. The Indian capital market should not depend only on a few companies commanding heavy weightage in the Sensex, which itself needs periodic revision in the same way as Morgan Stanley’s emerging market indices. The problem of volatility arising from the shallowness of our markets needs to be addressed with utmost urgency.

Vitality signs
Navroze D Dhondy’s article (‘Passion as the fifth P’, August 7)’ should help marketers bridge the gap between their assumptions of what people value and what they actually see as signs of brand vitality and vision. Brands with genuine insight give us hope.
