The stage is set for the biggest journalism awards in India. On Monday, Vice President Hamid Ansari will give away the Ramnath Goenka Awards for Excellence in Journalism to the best of India’s journalists — men and women who adhere to the highest standards of ethics, accuracy and fairness in their work. The awards ceremony will be held at the Taj Palace Hotel in New Delhi.

The awards, instituted by the Express Group in 2006, celebrate stories that made a difference and qualities that define great journalism. The award-winning entries were selected by an eminent 10-member jury that included N R Narayana Murthy, mentor and founder, Infosys; Naresh Chandra, former Indian ambassador to the US; Dr M S Swaminathan, agricultural scientist and Rajya Sabha MP; Shobhana Bhartia, vice-chairperson and editorial director, HT Media Limited; Bakul Dholakia, former IIM-A director; Rama Bijapurkar, leading management consultant; Shyam Benegal, filmmaker; Deepak Parekh, HDFC chairman; legal luminary Fali S Nariman and Keshub Mahindra, chairman, Mahindra & Mahindra.

“The entries were all very good. Ranging from a broad range of subjects, the stories addressed a wide range of concerns. I found the entries better than last year and I’ve noticed that each year, in both broadcast and print, the quality of work is improving,” says Naresh Chandra.
