For addressing the problems faced by the agriculture sector in the South Asian region, setting up of 'South Asian Farmers' Forum' was announced here. It will hold its maiden meet in Pakistan in September this year.
Suresh P Prabhu, former Union minister for power, announced the formation of the forum at the concluding session of the first-ever international conference of SAARC countries titled 'Science based agricultural transformation towards alleviation of hunger and poverty'.
The first formal meeting of the forum will be held in Pakistan in September this year. The forum would focus on initiatives needed to bring back agriculture to the center stage of development agenda in the south Asian region.
For controlling rising food prices in the south Asia, over 300 agricultural scientists and ministers from SAARC countries met here to prepare a road map for developing buyers market in the region. Pointing out that the south Asian region has 40% of the world's poor and 35% of the under-nourished populace with highest concentration of poverty and hunger, Suresh Prabhu, who is also chairman of the steering committee for the meet, said, "The SAARC region's economy is dependent on agriculture and the conference would attempt to explore ways to use technology, science and research to transform agricultural production."
