As JMM’s Cabinet entry is delayed further, its chief Shibu Soren seems to be working keen on capturing the chief minister’s chair in Jharkhand. The JMM, sources said, is holding discussions with the RJD, which has seven MLAs in the state, to put pressure on present chief minister Madhu Koda to resign and make way for Soren. Given the influence Railway minister Lalu Prasad Yadav has on Koda, JMM leaders believe that Soren’s wish could be fulfilled in ‘‘some time.’’
The UPA is ruling the state with the support of four independents and two members belonging to the Left parties. In 81-member Jharkhand Assembly, JMM has 17 seats, Congress has nine and the RJD’s tally is seven. Koda, one of the independents, is supposed to be a protégé of Lalu Yadav. So, JMM expects Lalu to play a crucial role in fulfilling the wishes of its leader Shibu Soren.
There were reports that the NDA had offered Soren the chief minister’s post if it voted against the UPA government during the July 22 trust vote. But Soren firmly stood with the UPA and he was supposed to get back the Union coal ministry. One of the JMM MPs was also offered an MoS post at the Centre. However, after about three weeks of the trust vote, no reshuffling of the Cabinet has taken place. JMM’s support was crucial for the UPA’s existence.
A senior leader of the party Hem Lal Murmu told reporters here that a delegation of JMM leaders will soon meet the Railway minister. Murmu, however, did not reveal what would be the agenda of the meeting.
