Srinagar, Aug 17: Separatists on Sunday suspended their strike in Kashmir valley over the Amarnath land row for three days beginning Tuesday to provide relief to people facing problems owing to the shutdown.
This decision was taken at a three-hour meeting here of the co-ordination committee, an amalgam of both factions of the Hurriyat Conference and other separatist outfits, Kashmir Chamber of Commerce and traders’ federation.
“We are aware of problems faced by students, labourers and the poor. It has been decided to suspend the strike from Tuesday for three days,” said Syed Ali Shah Geelani, chairman of the hardline faction of the Hurriyat.
However, a march, called by the separatists, to the local office of the United Nations at Sonawar would be held on Monday as per schedule. Earlier, the district administration, apprehending violence, requested separatists to review their decision to hold the march. Senior district and police officials met Geelani and requested them to call off their march.
