Kolkata, Mar 11: The government is setting up another service tax commissionerate in Kolkata because of huge workload, according to HK Sharan, chief commissioner of central excise & service tax, ministry of finance, govt of India. At present, the city has one such commissionerate.
"We are considering to send a proposal to the central board of excise and customs for another commissionerate in Kolkata," Sharan said at an interactive session organised by the Bengal National Chamber of Commerce & Industry here on Tuesday.
He said, "New service tax divisions have been finalised for Guwahati and Arunachal Pradesh, which will be functional from April 1, 2008."
Service tax collection from West Bengal for the current fiscal stood at Rs 1,895 crore till February." The target for the state is Rs 2,195 crore, which is likely to be met before the end of this fiscal," Sharan said.
Collection from Kolkata for the current fiscal has been Rs 1,613 crore till February.
