Scotiabank, a Canadian bank working in five major cities of India for over 20 years, has launched a new programme to attract Indian newcomers in Toronto.

"We are aware of the many challenges and hurdles that newcomers face when settling into a new country," said Rania Llewellyn, Vice-President, Multicultural Banking of the bank.

"Scotiabanks StartRight programme not only addresses the basic needs of newcomers, but offers the financial tools to them to build a richer life for themselves and families," she said.

To offer its customers a "unique value", Scotiabank was offering simple and complete financial solutions in one convenient package and was also working with partners like Western Union, Llewellyn said.

"With more than 200,000 immigrants arriving in Canada each year, we continually assess and adapt the services we are able to provide to the multicultural communities we serve," she said.

To further enhance its capabilities and services, the bank recently established a Multicultural Banking Department, which conducted extensive research to identify the most pressing needs of new immigrants.

"We were told by newly arrived Canadians that they need a simplified process to establish their bank account, a credit card to start building their credit history, access to foreign exchange services and the ability to transfer money between Canada and their home country," Llewellyn said.

Scotiabank has had a presence in India for more than 20 years and currently had five branches in the country offering commercial and corporate services at cities Mumbai, New Delhi, Coimbatore, Bangalore and Hyderabad, she added.
