



Mumbai, Sep 24 : The Union ministry of textiles plans to set up a centre of excellence (CoE) in various sectors of technical textiles, entrusting each centre a specific product or product group to provide infrastructure support at one place for the convenient manufacture of technical textiles.
“Four segments have been identified as the prime need of the Indian textile industry viz, agro-textiles, geo-textiles, medical textiles and protective textiles,” Maganlal H Doshi, president, Synthetic and Art Silk Mills’ Research Association (Sasmira), said. Sasmira is a cooperative venture set up by the man-made textile industry of India after Independence to serve as a multi-functional institute for scientific and technological purposes.
“CoEs are being established with a vision, backed by a world-class service and driven by research to serve the industry in general and the agricultural sector in particular,” Doshi said. Sasmira in association with the Man-made Textile Research Association (Mantra), Surat and Navsari Agricultural University (NAU) has been designated as a CoE for agro-textiles.
The CoE will encompasses four key activities including setting up of a state-of-the-art testing centre for agro- textiles, setting up of a pilot plant for demonstration of a latest technologies for the manufacture of agro-textiles, a state-of-the art information centre and a training centre. Sasmira has also stepped up activity on three new projects.
