New Delhi, May 21: While the months of April and May were the season of the much-awaited passenger car launches, June-July would see the launches and relaunches of some of India’s most sought after sports utility vehicles (SUVs).
Over the next two months, brace up for the new Grand Vitara from Suzuki, the 2.2 litre Scorpio from the stable of the country’s largest utility vehicles manufacturer Mahindra and Mahindra (M&M), Ford Endeavour TDCi and the new Tata Safari. M&M currently sells the 2.6 litre Scorpio in the domestic market.
The last two months have seen some very high profile launches. It all began with the launch of the 1.1 litre Hyundai Getz Prime and was followed by the made in India BMW 3-Series, Fiat Palio Stile, the completely built unit (CBU) of Nissan Teana, Mahindra-Renault’s Logan, the Chevy Spark and the premium sedan Suzuki SX4.
The multi-utility vehicle (MUV) segment sales outpaced the passenger car sales growth, albeit marginally, in April this year, largely fuelled by SUV sales. While passenger car sales grew 11.26% during this period, MUV sales registered a growth of 11.40%.
As compared to the entry-level midsize car, which saw its sales declining by 14.31% in financial year 2006-07, entry-level SUVs (which fall in almost the same price band) recorded double-digit growth.
Tata Motors sold 47,893 units of Sumo and Safari in the last fiscal, an increase of 26% over the previous year. Safari sales at 15,816 units have been the highest for any fiscal since its launch.
M&M sold 38,015 units of Scorpio during 2006-07, up 20.06% as against 31,661 units in the same period the previous year.
