The ad campaign of Shah Rukh Khan’s Kolkata Knight Riders has a player bouncing a cricket ball on his knee. “That’s because you have to play cricket like football in Kolkata,” Khan intervened, as he launched his Indian Premier League (IPL) team along with Red Chillies’ business partners Jay Mehta and Juhi Chawla Mehta, captain Sourav Ganguly and coach John Buchanan, here on Tuesday.
King Khan was ready with the whole package — the team, the theme song, the logo, the mascot (a tiger named Hoog Lee) and even the team jersey in black & gold designed by Manish Malhotra. Khan said he was overwhelmed by the warm welcome in the City of Joy, and even spouted the first lines of the theme song, Korbo, Lorbo, Jeetbo Re, in Bengali.
“We will persevere, we will fight all problems, we will give it our best shot and we will win,” Khan translated.
Khan said the IPL matches would have loads of entertainment. He was also planning to get into merchandising and release an album with songs by Usha Uthup, Bappi Lahiri and Pritam.
“I have asked Sourav and John (Buchanan) to dance at the beginning of every game,” he joked, making Sourav blush.
Khan played to the gallery, but ducked all key questions, starting from the controversial ticket-sharing issue with the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) for the 88,000-seater Eden, sources of revenue and sponsorship deals.
Asked whether Red Chillies would give more tickets to CAB rather than going by the 80:20 ticket-sharing plan that could deprive CAB’s constituents, Khan said: “I haven’t come to create stress. We are going to sit down and sort it out. We will make sure that no one is unhappy.”
On sponsors, Khan said: “Believe me, I do not have that much money to buy a team. I am lucky to have some co-sponsors to run the show. More are welcome.”
