: Usage of short messaging services (SMS) is growing at the rate of 30 per cent per month. Even though the revenues generated from SMS comprise only two per cent of the total revenues of cellular operators, this figure is expected to cross the 5 per cent mark by 2002-end, says Escotel CEO Manoj Kohli.
Bharti Cellular, which clocks nearly 10 million SMS’s per month in Delhi, does not rule out the cost of sending SMS going down in the recent future. However, this cost rationalisation will happen none too soon. In Delhi, a post-paid cellular customer pays Rs 1.50 while a pre-paid customer pays Rs 2 per outgoing SMS.
It is cheaper in the rest of the country — Mumbai and Bangalore customers spend just Re per outgoing SMS. It’s cheaper still in non-metros. “We charge 50 paise per SMS plus a monthly charge of Rs 25 for post-paid subscribers,” said Mr Kohli.
