Chennai, April 12: A massive five-year plan is under way for setting up a metro rail project in Chennai. Estimated to cost Rs 5,086.85 crore, the first phase of the project is to be completed by 2010. It will cover 31.54-km from Tiruvottiyur to the airport through Anna Salai and the 13.54-km stretch from Chennai Beach to Koyambedu along the EVR Periyar Salai.
The Tiruvottiyur-airport segment would have 8.4 km underground system and the rest in an elevated system in the central median.
An additional network, from Thiruvanmiyur to Ambattur through Luz, Nandanam, and T Nagar, also is proposed. However, the work for that is to be taken up after 2016 only.
These proposals are made by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) which has completed a feasibility report. Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa told the state Assembly that the Corporation is to submit a detailed project report in six months time at a cost of Rs 3.30 crore.
Simultaneously efforts would be taken to determine the organisation for undertaking the work and funding arrangements for the massive project, she said.
