The Union Cabinet referred the Right to Education Bill 2005 to the group of ministers. The bill, once approved by the GoM, is expected to be taken up during the monsoon session of parliament, an official said. Once approved by parliament, the bill will pave the way for free and compulsory education to children between six and 14 years of age.

The Cabinet also approved introduction of Prevention of Corruption (Amendment) Bill, 2008, in Parliament, science and technology minister Kapil Sibal said. He said the bill will seek to give protection to retired government servants, as many of them were prosecuted without any sanction. The Cabinet also gave it nod to further open up trade under Safta by reducing to 480, the sensitive items list that will remain outside the concessional trade in the region. The Cabinet also gave its approval for deleting the road map for tariff reductions in respect of the 264 items from the sensitive list.

“This is in pursuance of India’s announcement during the 14th Saarc summit regarding its readiness to accept asymmetrical responsibilities, including opening her markets to her South Asian neighbours without insisting on reciprocity,”Sibal said.
