: of the top 100 Facebook developers according to Andonomics. Jambool is ranked number 17th.

Vikas is very bullish on how social media can help companies and products build their brand. He says, “Social media is drastically changing how users engage with brands and products. Where blogs helped users connect with a faceless corporate, social networks can help brands go one step further. Users who are passionate about the brands can become their evangelists on the network — and brands can suddenly find a huge audience open up for them at an extremely low cost.” And clearly big and small corporations and their PR agencies are closely watching the social media landscape and looking for ways to tap into this pool of passionate users. Vikas points out, “The opportunity on social networks is for brands to get involved with companies that are innovating in this space. With the platformisation of the social networks, the market is wide open for brands to engage application providers and reach out to a large user base.” And that is already happening, and we can see the beginnings of it in Silicon Valley.

Silicon Valley-based Serena Software, a software company that provides enterprise change management software and services has Facebook Fridays. Serena Software started using Facebook as its corporate Intranet since last November and it seems like its social media experiment is working. Every Friday 800 Serena employees spend an hour of their personal time working on their Facebook profiles and connecting with co-workers, customers, family and friends and also recruit new employees. It turns out that Serena President and CEO Jeremy Burton is a big believer of Facebook and thinks it is important for a company to reconnect as people and not just as workers.

Clearly, Indian corporations especially IT companies can take a leaf out of Serena Software and implement Facebook on their Intranet and I won’t be surprised if this new viral way of connecting and communicating takes off in a big way. As I mentioned in my previous column social networks will probably find strong attraction in India and help companies connect with their workers and consumers and help build their brands. That is the way to do business in today’s interconnected world, which is a two-way, interactive way of doing business....
