Pharma major Ranbaxy on Wednesday said it has launched hypertension drug Amlodipine tablets in Japan.

The company launched its first independently developed generic drug Amlodipine tablets in 2.5 mg and 5 mg variants in Japan, Ranbaxy Laboratories said in a filing to the Bombay Stock Exchange.

The drug is currently the largest molecule, which has gone off-patent in Japan. It has a market size of around two billion dollars, the company said.

"The present reform process by the Government of Japan is encouraging generic substitution, and Ranbaxy is well positioned to offer its affordable generic alternatives to the Japanese healthcare system," Ranbaxy CEO and MD Malvinder Mohan Singh said.

Earlier in April, the drug major had received approval from the Japanese Ministry of Health and Labour Welfare (MHLW-Japan) for marketing the generic version of Amlodipine tablets in that country.

The tablet is the first independent product approval received by Ranbaxy in Japan and has the distinction of being the first product developed by any foreign generic pharmaceutical company outside Japan and subsequently being granted approval by MHLW (Japan), it had said.

The generics market in Japan is expected to touch 30 per cent by volume by 2012. Ranbaxy already has four products in the Japanese generic market.

Since 2004, Ranbaxy has filed seven products in Japan. Shares of the company were trading at Rs 469.30 in late afternoon trading, up 1.38 per cent on BSE.
