New Delhi, Aug 12: The deputy governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), Rakesh Mohan, has emerged as one of the front-runners to be India's representative at the World Bank as an executive director for a period of three years.
The present executive director of World Bank, Dhanendra Kumar's term with the bank comes to an end in September. Kumar is believed to be one of the front-runners for the post of the chairman of the Competition Commission of India (CCI).
Before Kumar, CM Vasudev represented India in the board of directors of the Bank.
The 24 executive directors make up World Bank's board of directors and oversee business, including reviewing loans and guarantees, new policies, administrative budget, country support strategies, and borrowing and financial decisions
Mohan, who took over as the deputy governor of the RBI in July 2005 for a period of five years, is expected to be one of the contenders for the post of governor of RBI along with Planning Commission deputy chairman, Montek Singh Ahluwalia.
The present RBI governor VY Reddy's term comes to an end in September.
As deputy governor, Mohan looks after the monetary policy department, department of statistical Analysis and Computer Services, Department of Economic Analysis and Policy, Secretary's department, financial market department and co-ordination work.
Mohan was appointed as the deputy Governor of the
Reserve Bank in September 2002 for a period of three years. He relinquished that post in October 2004 when he was appointed as secretary, department of economic affairs in the ministry of finance.
As DEA secretary, Mohan was also the alternate governor of the World Bank and Asian Development Bank.
Born on January 14, 1948, Mohan has been director and chief executive of the Indian Council for research and international economic relations and vice chairman, infrastructure development finance company. He also held the position of adviser to the finance minister and chief economic adviser between January 4, 2001 and May 15, 2002.
