: The Railways is in the process of finalising a policy on leasing railway land to container operators to build inland container depots. The ministry is also formulating a overall policy to let the box operators use the existing good-sheds to load and unload containers. The railways is trying to increase its fee based income by this new policy. The policy would specify that the container operators would have to identify specific good-sheds or platforms before approaching the zonal railways. The availability of space on platforms or in good sheds will decide if they can use the area for handling containers. Which essentially would mean that the platforms will be common facility for various operators to book the space to use it. The railways admit that such usage will only be a small volume for the overall operations for any box operator. The railways charges its subsidiary Container Corporation of India Rs250 per twenty ft equivalent unit container handled on the railway land. The new policy will allow new container operators who came in lately to establish inland container depots (ICD).
