



New Delhi, April 30: The railway ministry has issued orders banning smoking in trains and railway premises, including the Rail Bhawan in New Delhi, under the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products (Prohibition of Advertisement and Regulation of Trade and Commerce, Production, Supply and Distribution) Act, 2003, with effect from Saturday.
Accordingly, zonal railways, production units, attached and subordinate offices and public sector undertakings under the ministry of railways have been directed to ban smoking strictly.
The provisions of the impugned Act have been brought to the notice of all railway men and women asking them to follow the provisions strictly.
The punishment for violators is Rs 200 which is compoundable and subject to summary trial in accordance with the procedure under the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973.
The Act also prohibits chewing of tobacco products, sale, advertisement and trade in tobacco and tobacco related products, including their production, supply and distribution.
