Mumbai, December 4: The overall rabi scenario is not very positive based on the early indicator of area sown under different crops, a National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange (NCDEX) report said.
All categories of rabi crops have shown a 19 per cent decline in area sown to 194.4 lakh hectares as on November 16 as compared to 239.9 lakh hectares last year. The normal sown area for all crops is 565.1 lakh hectares.
"While a complete picture will emerge after a couple of months, the current pattern (of rabi crops) approximately covers around 34 per cent of the normal sown area for various crops as against 42 per cent for same period last year," NCDEX said in its report on agri-progress in the country.
Notably, the area sown is just one indicator of crop prospects and factors such as monsoon, pest attacks and frost etc also affect the output of the crops, it said.
The area sown is higher only in case of crops such as urad, moong and barley.
All the three major rabi crops, wheat, chana and mustard have witnessed lower sown area so far. In case of wheat, only 13 per cent of the area has been sown as against over 60 per cent for chana and mustard.
According to data released by the Agriculture Ministry, the area under wheat declined by 34.1 per cent at 34.75 lakh hectares as on November 16 as compared to 52.71 lakh hectares last year. Oil seeds were also sown on 47.2 lakh hectares, against from 68.2 lakh hectares last season, a 30.7 per drop.
Cereals sowing declined by 21.9 per cent at 79.7 lakh hectares area as compared to 101.9 lakh hectares covered last year.
