Kolkata, Jul 31 : The proposed expansion in the power sector during the 11 th Plan period might have huge economic implications for the north east with the potential for large-scale employment generation, secretary to the Union ministry for power, Anil Razdan, said here Tuesday. "Around 8 lakh people will be required to implement the capacity extension plans in the country," he added.
The proposed capacity addition in the power sector during the period is 78,000mw, out of which the north east will account for 5600mw, Razdan said.
"The total investment in the region will be around Rs 50,000 crore during the period. More investment meant for projects planned for the 12th five-year Plan will follow," he said.
Speaking at the North East Power Summit 2007, organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry, Razdan said two new projects have been proposed for the north east. ONGC will set up a 740mw gas-based plant in Tripura, while NTPC will promote a 750mw coal-based plant in Assam.
Razdan urged investors in the power sector to set up training institutes in the vicinity of the projects and recruit students from there for execution of the projects.
Expressing concern over the huge transmission and distribution (T&D) losses in north eastern states, Razdan said the figure was as high as 66% in some of them. To minimise the losses, the revised Accelerated Power Distribution & Reforms Programme (APDRP), to be implemented in the current fiscal, would have a provision where power projects should minimize their T&D losses to 15% to get the benefit of having their outstanding loans converted to government grants, he said.
