New launches have shored up the fortunes of India Yamaha Motor Pvt Ltd. Its marketshare has doubled in seven months. The company, which launched a new Gladiator model in March and the 150cc YZF-R15 in May, now has a 2.6% share of the domestic motorcycle industry against 1.3% in January.

“The increased marketshare is in line with the company’s target to achieve a marketshare of 10% by 2010. The recently launched bikes have helped us to widen our product portfolio across all segments, and with FZ, another 150cc bike scheduled to be launched in October, there would be products across all price categories as well, thus giving bike enthusiasts several options,” says Pankaj Dubey, division head (sales and marketing), India Yamaha Motor.

The 150cc YZF-R15, which has boosted the company’s image among young bikers, is priced at Rs 97,425, way above other bikes in this segment. But FZ would be priced around Rs 50,000 to fill the gap in the lower end, 150cc bike segment.

Yamaha sold 11,738 units in July this year against 8,779 a year ago, a growth of 34%. The industry growth in July was only 22%, though from a larger base, at 4,57,341 units compared to 3,75,004 in the same last year.

YZF-R15 has helped the company improve its performance month-on-month. From a sales decline of 9% in May at 9,295 units, Yamaha’s sales went up by 4% in June to 9,699 units, rising 21% in July to 11,738 units.

However, the performance of the motorcycle industry, on a sequential basis, was dismal with the segment seeing a dip of 3% in sales in July at 4,57,341 units as against 4,73,899 units in June.

Yamaha currently has Crux, G5 and Alba in the 100cc segment, Gladiator SS and Gladiator RS in the 125cc segment and YZF R-15 in the 150cc segment.
